I have begun reading John Calvin’s Institutes of the Christian Religion along with the folks at Reformation21. Calvin begins his work with a prefatory address to the king of France. In light of recent events in our nation, this quote stands out:
“The characteristic of a true sovereign is, to acknowledge that, in the administration of his kingdom, he is a minister of God. He who does not make his reign subservient to the divine glory, acts the part not of a king, but a robber. He, morevoer, decieves himself who anticipates long prosperity to any kingdom which is not ruled by the sceptre of God, that is, by His divine word. For the heavenly oracle is infallible which has declared that ‘where there is no vision the people perish’ (Proverbs 29:18).” (Emphasis Mine)
I think about this quote and I am reminded how our nation has strayed from God’s Word and is becoming increasingly Godless. Have we become a nation of “self decievers”?

Great point Micah, I’m finding that Calvin speaks a lot about self-deception in the first few chapters of his Institutes.
I’m also reading and blogging the Institutes and have just posted a blog on Chapter 4 re those who suppress the truth either in ignorance or maliciously –
